As in human medicine, equally important in veterinary medicine, is regular, at least annual laboratory testing. As a part of this evaluation, blood, urine, and stool (feces) should be checked. On average, treating a medical problem early saves anywhere between 2 – 10 times the cost as compared to when treatment is delayed. Laboratory testing helps to uncover hidden problems. Pets are masters of hiding symptoms when they are ill, and they can’t tell us when they are sick. Animals in the wild showing weakness or sickness are preyed upon by others that are stronger in the species. Laboratory Evaluations:

 

Blood – Evaluate annually or anytime a pet is unwell

 

1. Internal organ health: liver, kidneys, and pancreas

2. Hormone levels, such as thyroid

3. Complete blood counts

 

Blood testing identifies medical problems such as:

• Bacterial Infections

• Viral Infections

• Organ failure or impairment

• Cardiac function abnormalities

• Cancer toxins

• Heart worm disease

 

Urine – Evaluate annually and anytime that pet is unwell or has changes in urinary habits.

 

Urine testing identifies medical problems such as:

• Infections

• Crystals – building blocks to bladder and kidney stones

• Toxins

• Parasites

• Abnormal PH

 

Stool – Samples should be evaluated twice yearly or anytime pet is not feeling well or has diarrhea, loose stool, vomiting, anorexia, poor coat, weight loss, bloating, or gas.
